Myself and Nath collected Clare at around 6:15pm from her home leaving Southwick for approximately 630pm I had previously to contacted Terry to let him know of our arrival. We would be meeting up with him at St Mary’s Gate for around 8pm. We made our way up the A27 to Arundel and eventually arrived at St Mary’s Gate for around 7.15/7.20 it seemed quite busy with all the coaches parked directly in front of St Mary’s Gate and we were not entirely sure this was a good time for our pre investigation .Never the less we entered and brought some drinks to await Terry’s arrival later on. We sat on a table just at the entrance of the kitchen door which seemed to have an odd feel and Nath mentioned that there was definitely something active within the area facing the church opposite. Clare said she felt that she had goose bumps and hair standing on end. After being settled there for while Nath came forward with name RICHARD TREEVES. I said I would look into this and see if this person had any connection to place. Unfortunately we weren’t able to stay long as the table was needed for guests who were having their dinner. We were more than happy to move somewhere else and ended up in the TV room just next to the bar area.
Nath said he felt there was a white dog generally active in this area but nothing else. I went up to the bar, and told the barmaid, we were to meet Terry, he arrived soon after that.

Terry came over to our table and greeted us and said he would more than happy to show us around St Mary’s Gate even though it was pretty busy to be honest. I showed Terry the name Nath had mentioned earlier and he immediately recognised the name as being a guard who had been killed outside room 6 whilst guarding Oliver Cromwell during the English civil war. Terry lead the way and we made our way up the stairs to Room 6 or as it is known the Oliver Cromwell room which he said had been plagued with strange happenings including alarm clocks with would not turn off and various other things, apparently this seemed to happen mostly to American guests staying there. When entering Room 6 Nath said straight away that there was quite a lot of activity in this area. I also took some baseline readings for Temp and EMF fields. After this we made our way the cellar which Terry had mentioned seeing a shadow, when nobody else was down there at the time. Everyone took it slowly and carefully down the steps as they were very steep. Once we were down in the Cellar Nath mentioned that a lot of blood had been spilt down there and he believed this to be quite an active area. I also took baseline readings in the cellar. We all came back up from the cellar and made our way to the kitchen itself. Nath mentioned that he felt the white dog again! After this we all ventured back to the bar area to see if could come up some dates for our investigation and to see when Room 6 would available. It was decided sometime in August would be the best time at a date to be arranged. Terry mentioned during our tour of St Mary’s Gate that a guest staying there had fallen down some steps after seeing an apparition. This had occurred at the entrance to outside beer garden and this is duly noted in the accident report book. Myself and the rest of the team are really looking forward to investigating this great location and which is so rich in history and seems to be very active. I would like to say a big thank you to Terry for sparing his valuable time, and allowing us to conduct our pre investigation visit at St Mary’s Gate.

The pub seemed quite busy as we approached it, with 2 or 3 coaches parked outside. Were we able to get a seat? Yep (though in the dining area, as it turned out). Lucky we did though, as after several minutes had passed; I was able to pick up on the name Richard Treeves. Not always easy to get a surname, so I was quite glad to get this much!

Quite a friendly establishment, and like a maze inside! It did take me a while to ‘tune into’ the place, but after a while I could tell there was definitely something here. We met up with Terry after having to sacrifice our seats to some paying guests (oops). A very friendly and welcoming man.  He was able to confirm that Richard Treeves was the name of one of Cromwell’s guards, apparently killed outside the room his master was staying in (now named the Cromwell Room – Room 6). So a confirmed hit – excellent stuff indeed!

Terry took us on a brief tour of the place. Room 6 was positively brimming with energy. I immediately knew why so many people felt uncomfortable staying there upon entering it. Really looking forward to being able to spend some decent time in there on the actual investigation. I also picked up on a supernatural doggy around the bar area, and in the kitchen. Interestingly, Terry’s two Westies seemed quite at ease in the pub. How I wish they could speak though – they are definitely aware of the paranormal activity in the pub, but not at bothered by it. Upon entering the cellar – with its ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ rooms, I was very much aware of there being blood previously spilt there. It felt like recently deceased bodies had been stored there some time in the far past – particularly in the cold room. The stench of blood was very apparent to me. Was quite glad to leave the cellar, truth be told.

The longer I spent in the pub, the more I was really getting tuned into the place. I am really looking forward to the actual investigation. I want to learn about Richard Treeves, and to be able to confirm why bodies were once kept there. To pick up so much in such a short time is a very good sign indeed for the actual investigation. Terry and his team are a friendly bunch. Should be a good one!
